چکیده

Overwinter survival of hibernators is directly influenced by the fat reserves accumulated during active season. The European ground squirrel, Spermophilus citellus, an endangered flagship species open grasslands central and southeastern Europe, no exception. Considering anthropogenic changes affecting its habitats in northern Serbia, we studied species? feeding habits subjecting feces to microhistological examination. In addition identifying plant remains feces, examined vegetation four study sites located inside a local mosaic steppe saline pastures. Our findings indicate that these remaining ground-squirrel are diverse stable covered native flora represents complete dietary base for species. diet dominated small number species, specifically Achillea millefolium, legumes grasses, with sporadic contributions from other S. citellus also differs location season grasses dominate early season, while A. millefolium takes precedence later year. This information essential development future habitat management strategies. light predicted impact climate change on our will be instrumental translocations conservation actions future.

Natural entrainment without dawn and dusk: the case of the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus).

Observational data collected in the field and in enclosures show that diurnal, burrow-dwelling European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) never were above ground during twilight at dawn or at dusk. The animals emerged on average 4.02 h (SD = 0.45) after civil twilight at dawn and retreated in their burrows on average 2.87 h (SD = 0.47) before civil twilight at dusk. Daily patterns of lig...

Nonphotic entrainment in a diurnal mammal, the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus).

Entrainment by nonphotic, activity-inducing stimuli has been investigated in detail in nocturnal rodents, but little is known about nonphotic entrainment in diurnal animals. Comparative studies would offer the opportunity to distinguish between two possibilities. (1) If nonphotic phase shifts depend on the phase of the activity cycle, the phase response curve (PRC) should be about 180 degrees o...

Hibernation effects on memory in European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus).

Effects of hibernation on memory were tested in European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus). The animals were trained in summer to successfully accomplish two tasks: a spatial memory task in a maze and an operant task on a feeding machine. One group hibernated normally, and the other was prevented from hibernation by maintaining ambient temperature at 22 degrees C. In spring, the same tas...

Ectoparasites of the ground squirrel (Citellus citellus (L.)) in Turkey.

A total of 100 ground squirrels, Citellus (C.) citellus were trapped in rural regions of Konya in order to determine the presence of ectoparasites. Of these C. citellus examined, 16% (16/100) were infected with at least one ectoparasite species. Two types of ectoparasites were found including 10% fleas and 7% ticks. Only two flea species were found on C. citellus including Nosopsyllus fasciatus...
